M.Tech. (Research) Program



The M.Tech. (by Research) is a unique program that emphasizes research over traditional coursework. It is ideal for students who wish to focus on solving scientific problems and developing innovative technologies in the quantum domain.

Categories of Admission

  • Regular Full-Time: Scholars with or without MoE Assistantship/Institute Fellowship or project support.
  • Part-Time: For staff members of the Institute or individuals employed in R&D environments/industries.
  • External Registration (ERP): For candidates sponsored by and employed in industries/organizations with R&D facilities.
  • Lateral Entry: Available for candidates already pursuing M.Tech/M.S. in recognized institutes, allowing for credit transfer.

Eligibility Criteria

Regular Full-Time

  • Standard: Bachelor’s degree in Engineering/Technology or Master’s in appropriate Sciences including Humanities/Social Sciences.
  • CFTI Graduates: B.Tech/B.E. from CFTIs with a minimum CGPA of 7.5 are eligible. National Level examinations are waived for HTRA Scholarship.
  • Professional Bodies: Candidates with Associate Membership (e.g., IEI, ASI) who have passed both Part A and B with a good record and valid GATE score.

Part-Time/External

  • Same educational qualifications as regular candidates, with an additional requirement of at least two years of work experience.

Program Requirements

  • Course Work: Minimum 15 credits of postgraduate level courses plus "Research Methodology". Minimum CGPA of 7.5 required.
  • Residency Requirement:
    • Regular Full-Time: Minimum period of 18 months on campus.
    • Part-Time/ERP: Flexible residency allowed to complete course work (minimum 16 weeks on campus, which can be split into visits).
  • Conversion to Ph.D.: Meritorious scholars (min. CGPA 8.00) may apply to convert their registration to the Ph.D. program after 2 semesters.

Thesis & Award

  • Synopsis & Seminar: Presentation of synopsis and at least one open seminar talk.
  • Publication: Research results must be published in a refereed reputed conference proceeding or journal before thesis submission.
  • Viva Voce: Final evaluation by a board of examiners.
  • Duration: Full-time scholars: 3 years; Part-time scholars: 4 years.
